What is Group Therapy for Complex PTSD and Relational Trauma?

Group therapy brings people together in a guided, nurturing setting to explore shared experiences and work through emotional challenges. For adults coping with Complex PTSD or relational trauma, it offers a valuable space to build understanding, foster connection, and promote recovery alongside others who have faced similar struggles.

Unlike individual therapy, group therapy emphasizes interpersonal learning, enabling participants to explore relationship patterns, practice new coping strategies, and receive real-time feedback. This collaborative environment helps clients recognize that they are not alone in their struggles, reducing feelings of isolation that often accompany trauma.

Group therapy is best suited for adults who are ready to engage with others in processing their relationship trauma, experiences, building emotional regulation skills, and improving relational functioning. With expert facilitation, participants can gain insight, practice trust, and cultivate resilience—making group therapy for Complex PTSD and relational trauma an effective complement or alternative to one-on-one counseling.

FAQs About Group Therapy for Relational Trauma

  • All trauma groups are closed once they meet six members. We would never add a group member without the consensus of the entire group first.

  • Relational trauma repair is a method for group work developed by Tian Dayton, PhD. The group will be a place to safely connect with other Adult Children of Alcoholics (or those growing up with family dysfunction and with relational trauma or CPTSD) and to move towards emotional sobriety through developing skills in noticing/mindfulness of feeling, expression, processing, and self-regulation. The group will incorporate moving around the room and some creative practices such as guided imagery, journaling, letter-writing, and potentially Empty Chair work. Participants may also have an addiction history, but must be working on sobriety/12-step recovery actively. The group is closed to six members.
